I was so excited about this ear trainer that I have developed a mobile app based on the Alain Benbassat method. The only requirement is to practice for 10 minutes a day. ![]() what musical instrument you play (you don't even have to play one). how old you are - a 3 yo kid or a 90+ adult who you are - an absolute beginner in music or a virtuoso professional musician You begin to recognize the role (or function) of each tone in this key, which is incredibly similar to its role in other keys of the same scale.Īnd it is *guaranteed* anyone can gradually develop this skill. The main difference between the Functional Ear Trainer and other methods is that it teaches you to distinguish between tones in the context of a particular musical key. It is based on Alain's method to learn to recognize tones. One day I came across Alain Benbassat's program called "Functional Ear Trainer" and have been using it ever since. It is like when somebody is talking to you, you not only hear pleasant sounds, but you recognize words and their meaning. However, although such programs develop your ear, but can you actually play any melody you hear as soon as you listen to it? Most likely you have already tried different programs to learn to recognize intervals or even to acquire perfect pitch. A good musical ear helps when you are composing, improvising, transcribing melodies, or playing with others. It is so important for a musician to know what you are hearing. Something productive to do on the phone now other than mindlessly browse gear whilst pretending that I'm about to open the Kindle app.Have you (or maybe one of your friends) ever wanted to learn to transcribe or play music by ear? Thanks to for the Functional Ear Training app recommendation. It really helps to hum along with the notes and hum the interval, gets to be pretty visceral after a while. I went from being totally clueless on harmonic minor/major 2nd to getting a 92% after about 30+ minutes of practicing. Okay, definitely worth putting in the time. I keep going over to the piano to play the intervals to myself, and I've been trying to sing "do re mi" but with a flattened "re," it's totally foreign to my lazy western ears. The tones are totally blending together, I can't even pick out which is the root. It's like you said, I can tell the difference if you play them next to each other, but out of the blue I'm just guessing. ![]() I just started today and am baffled by the first "intervals" section on distinguishing between major and minor 2nds. I could probably have a sporting chance if it was single notes played one after another and practiced singing the interval, but chords - na struggling I can tell a major vs minor if played onw after another same chord as it were but not random ones. Had quite a few goes at it but it's not improving all for too much money although in fairness I haven't got far. It's not that impressive as far as I can tell so far.īit pissed off as there is a short video clip then a test. Stuck on third quiz - harmonic (ie a chord) identifying the major vs minor 3rd played as two notes (root and 3rd). ![]()
